Riana Cap– classic type in the old style working Kelpie. Leggy and lean gets over the ground with very little effort. Excellent outrun and wide cast. He is a good thinker, which makes it easy to redirect him on his cast if necessary. When starting Cap I found his natural instinct was to get out and look for his stock. I never had to help him it came naturally to him. Riana Tahnie, Caps daughter is very much in the same mould as her sire. Once she started working her cast was as as good as you could wish for.
All the Riana dogs we keep have a good cast. It goes with this line of dogs and it is bred into them by our selection for our working style of Kelpie. They move around their stock on a circle, with their head turned in towards the mob and keep a nice distance off them.When stopping stock they get right in front of them and cover all the leaders.
They are not the hard or strong eyed type as people are selecting today for “strong walk in strength”. Which may suit people that trial, but in everyday work situations it causes a lot of problems. That direct walk in without controlling the whole mob causes the mob to bust around that type of dog and does not control the stock effectively. They do not settle and or become easier to handle.
